Our network was founded as Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT) in the UK in 1998 by Jeremy Hope, Robin Fraser and Peter Bunce.
Jeremy Hope was the author of a number of articles and books on performance management and associated leadership issues. His article on Beyond Budgeting with colleague Robin Fraser won the prestigious IFAC award for best management accounting article of 1998. He is co-author (with Robin Fraser) of an article entitled Who Needs Budgets in the Harvard Business Review, February 2003. He was a renowned author of management books, Beyond Budgeting (2003) (co-authored with Robin Fraser), Re-inventing the CFO (2006), Transforming the Bottom Line (1995) and Competing in the Third Wave (1997), both co-authored with his brother Tony Hope). His books have been translated into many languages and won coveted awards in the USA. He has given many keynote speeches at major conferences on performance management topics. He began his career as a chartered accountant and has since had experience in venture capital and business management.
Since 1998 his work focused on “Beyond Budgeting” and he was research director and an inspirational leader of the Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT). Jeremy left a legacy through his role in articulating more effective ways to manage in the world where we all live. His work will live on through his writing, including his six books. His words and insightful thinking will continue to guide organizations for generations to come.
Robin Fraser is a speaker, writer and consultant. He co-founded the Beyond Budgeting Roundtable in 1998 and served as a BBRT Director for 10 years. He co-led the initial research (with Jeremy Hope) that culminated in 2003 in the publication by the Harvard Business School Press of the book ‘Beyond Budgeting’ and the HBR article ‘Who needs budgets’. He then focused on implementation of the ‘Beyond Budgeting’ model, recognizing early that an incremental approach was doomed to failure and that success depended on using a transformational process to build a coherent radically decentralized model, followed by long term continuous improvement. He supported implementation of the new model in user organizations and led the development of the BBRT ‘case for change’ diagnostic, which has helped several thousand users over the past few years. Formerly a management consulting partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK (and earlier in Iran), he has many years of experience in business planning, performance improvement, cost reduction and change management, and has worked in most sectors and industries. In PwC, he led the development of Priority Base Budgeting (PBB), and headed the firm’s Activity Based Management (ABM) practice. He holds a degree in Engineering and is a Fellow of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants, and worked initially in British Oxygen (BOC) and Rio Tinto (RTZ).
Prior to co-founding the BBRT, Peter Bunce managed several research programs for the Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing International (CAM-I) relating to cost management, computer-aided process planning, geometric modelling and next generation manufacturing systems. In his role in CAM-I he was instrumental in helping CAM-I to co-found the BBRT with Jeremy Hope and Robin Fraser. He was also the convener for the module on Global Markets and Future Manufacturing for The Manufacturing Institute’s MSc course in Manufacturing Leadership, accredited by Lancaster University. The Manufacturing Institute is an independent charity located in Manchester, England dedicated to improving manufacturing. Peter held a degree in Mechanical Engineering, PhD in Manufacturing Engineering and a Diploma in Management Studies. His particular interests and experiences were in management models for adaptive and innovative organizations, lean and agile thinking and future manufacturing systems that can respond to current and future global drivers. Peter was a Chartered Engineer and a member of the UK Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Very sadly, Peter Bunce passed away in August 2015. As one of the three founders, Peter played a key role in establishing the BBRT in 1998, and in its development since then. All through this time, Peter was incredibly committed to the BBRT, and he remained a member of the BBRT Core Team until his death. Together with his co-founders, Peter has left a legacy through his role in articulating more humane and effective ways to manage organizations. Peter was an inspirational leader of our network, a dear friend, colleague and mentor to many. He will be greatly missed.
